Characteristics of acquired equipments

1. AFM Microscope MULTIMODE-8-AM, from Veeco Instruments, is a high resolution nanolevel instrument, which allows analysis of phase distribution in polymers and composites in micron and nanometer range, nanofiller dispersion, interfaces and adhesion analysis and samples characterization in terms of physical and mechanical properties (hardness, module local elasticity, phase transitions) at local level through the use of "Contact mode", "Tapping Mode", "Phase Imaging", "Peak Force".

AFM Microscope MULTIMODE-8-AM is able:
 -  to produce high resolution images from topographic parameters and mechanical, electrical, magnetic properties measurement, at nano scale; measured mechanical properties are: adhesion, elasticity, hardness;
 -  to make local qualitative and quantitative measurements of mechanical, electrical or magnetic properties, at nano-scale, results being displayed as maps;
 -  to identify transitions of the different components of polymer blends, to identify the impurities from the surface of the sample.
AFM Microscope MULTIMODE-8-AM allowed operating in the following characteristic modes, appropriate to the application field of the project: contact, non-contact, tapping, lateral force, electric force, magnetic force, phase imaging, torsional resonance, peak force. The system allows obtaining real-time maps of the mechanical properties at nano-scale, while making the topographic image. Through software, the system offers the ability of all AFM parameters setting (operating point, gain, scan speed, etc.) allowing optimization of the obtained images even for soft materials, regardless of work circumstances.

2. Laboratory Platen Press P 200E with cooling cassette, from Dr. Collin, allows to obtain plates with a thickness ranging between 0.5 and 20 mm, films with thickness between 0.01 mm and 0.5 mm and other pressed or laminated parts of thermoplastics, elastomers and their composites with various organic and inorganic fillers.

Laboratory Platen Press P 200E with cooling cassette has a fixed upper platen and a lower one mounted on a mobile cross bar, both electrically heated and mounted on a stable chassis. The pressing force is achieved using a high-pressure hydraulic system capable of ensuring a constant contact pressure across the entire sample. The platens electric heating system provides a maximum temperature of 300°C, uniform all over the platens. The press is equipped with separate cooling cassette to ensure a controlled cooling, but platens are also provided with cooling coils to ensure rapid cooling. Platens dimension is 200x200 mm, pressing force is at least 200 kN, hydraulic pressure is 240 bar and the electric capacity of each platter is 2.5 kW.

3. The device for measuring the interface properties Cam 200 from KSV Instruments determines the properties at the interface between solids and liquids or liquids and liquids in order to asses the interface adhesion, the wetting properties of solid surfaces, of the hydrophobicity. This information is obtained by measuring the static and dynamic contact angle and interfacial/surface tension.

The device for measuring the interface properties Cam 200 allows the automatic determination of contact angle and surface tension and the computer analysis of data. The device provides a range of measuring between 0 and 180° for contact angle, with a measurement error of ± 0.1°, between 0.001 and 999 mN/m for surface tension with a measurement error of ± 0.01 mN/m, a data display range between 10 ms and 1000 s. High performance digital video camera, attached to this device, ensures a rated speed of images scrolling of at least 400 frames per second with a resolution of 512x150. The device is equipped with three dispensers, one precision syringe, a semi-automatic dispenser used for various liquids and an automatic dispenser with the possibility to dispense a large number of drops with the frequency fixed by the program.
